Every year our company has a pot-luck to celebrate Halloween. Almost all of the employees participate. We dress up. We bring food. We play games. It's really fun!
I planned ahead and decided to bring a Whole30 compliant pork roast with onions and bell peppers. A few people know that my colleague and I are doing the plan, so they brought whole foods like carrots, watermelon, etc. So, there was plenty for me to eat. I was by no means hungry.
But, I could see and smell all the other foods. The empanadas, the cheesecake, the bruschetta with burrata, the BBQ meatballs, the brownies, the rice crispy treats WITH M&Ms.... it was sensory overload. While the fun size candies all over the office no longer bother me or tempt me, this influx of sweet and savory foods was almost too much for me to handle.
My friend, who is on the plan, was having a hard time as well. She really wanted to leave the party. But, there were games to do and a costume contest. Even after the party, they left the food out for the remainder of the day. It was hard to pass by the kitchen without thinking about indulging in all the deliciousness.
In the end, I made it through the day without succumbing to the temptations. I feel good about deciding to do the Whole30 during this sweet season. My goal was to challenge myself to avoid all the bad foods that are prevalent this time of year. Instead of gaining ten pounds, I wanted to lose ten pounds.
And, so far it's working.
